what does it mean to tell stories of our business instead of market them?

What does it mean to tell stories of our business instead of market them? Well, in a way it’s about using language that disentangles us from the kind of marketing we’ve been conditioned to use and which, in many ways, is super unethical and harmful.

Telling the stories of our businesses is actually a really helpful approach and I find a much easier one to understand. We are, after all, a species that has relied on the telling of stories, parables, tales, and fables since time immemorial.

What this approach is really about is creating connections and fostering community with the people who want to invest in us and our vision, products, or services.

Telling the story of your business can include sharing with folks about what is important to you, where you came from, and how you came to do what you do.

If you’re a product or service-based business then sharing the value of what you offer and how that has supported you will help your customers connect with you, your values, and your own journey. You are an expert on something and that’s a big reason people are curious about you!

Telling the stories of our businesses does not mean shying away from calls to action or invitations to buy, register or engage. What it does is connect our customers in a way that invites them in to join us as opposed to creating an experience of lack or shame.

Storytelling cultivates relationships with the people we want to work with and at the end of the day, those are the relationships that will create a sustainable and heart-centered business.

If you’re curious about this approach but aren’t sure how to get started I’m offering my Generate Strategy sessions for $140 until December 15, 2021. These are one of my favourite offerings and I want to do more before the year turns over. You, me, and up to 90 minutes where we brainstorm, create, conceptualize or develop a plan for something in your business that needs attention, energy, or tending to. I love these calls. Folks I’ve worked with tell me they leave feeling inspired, relieved, rejuvenated, and excited. That’s how I want to close this year, and if you do too, then I would absolutely love to chat.
